LETTER FROM MARY ZINMAN & POETRY FROM MARY OLIVER
Dear David,
Well - - once upon a time—
I was checking out on my back yard greenery when I saw amidst the unruly Mess two large stones close together, one obviously paying a lot of attention to the other and the other shyly accepting it. It was clear to me that there was a great deal of love between them.
Of course David despite my strong conviction, my Australian nature crashed in and I quickly believed that I was losing it. Looking back at the stones however , I was once again sure that I was right. If only There was a way to know.
I came inside, sat down and picked up “Swan: Poems and Prose Poems” by Mary Oliver.
I opened at random and found I had chosen “On the Beach.”
On the Beach – Mary Oliver
“On the beach, at dawn:
Four small stones clearly
Hugging each other.
How many kinds of love
Might there be in the world,
And how many formations might they make
And who am I ever
To imagine I could know
Such a marvelous business?
When the sun broke
It poured willingly its light
Over the stones
That did not move, not at all,
Just as, to its always generous term,
It shed its light on me,
My own body that loves,
Equally, to hug another body.”
― Mary Oliver, Swan: Poems and Prose Poems
Don’t you find that amazing and beautiful?
Sleep well, dear David
Love, Mary
