LEAPING FORWARD WITH KATE BUSH, GIOVANNI PESCETTO, AND LILY CORNFORD
Where to begin?
Well last week I got two emails from my friend and fellow Zero Balancing teacher, Alan Hext, with a wonderful picture of our mutual friend, Giovanni Pescetto (r.i.p.) and a wonderful story connecting three people who themselves enabled leaps and bounds in the people around them, among them the famous singer, Kate Bush.
“Hello David,
At last - a pic of Giovanni, taken as a selfie on his visit to China. It was published in the ‘Meridians’ Acupuncture Journal of which he was a major photo contributor. The issue focused upon the Fire element, the earliest classical reference describes its nature as ‘blazing and ascending’.
(our “blazing and ascending” friend) “Giovanni also travelled to England to study with a remarkable Edwardian woman healer, Lily Cornford. Lily also treated Kate Bush, the English singer/songwriter and she included a song ‘Lily’ on her album, The Red Shoes. The track opens with Lily reciting a memorable invocation, the text of which I include below –
Oh thou who gives sustenance to the universe,
From who all things proceed,
To whom all things return,
Unveil to us the face of the true spiritual sun,
Hidden by a disc of golden light,
That we may know the truth,
And do our whole duty,
As we journey to thy sacred feet.
The invocation in Kate Bush’s ‘Lily’ is the entry into a song awakening the archangels guarding the four directions. Lily Cornford was a lady from another age – her therapy was named ‘Mental Colour Healing’ and involved hands-on and off the body with visualisations - which rescued Kate Bush at a time of personal crisis. The importance Kate gave to this song meant she chose it to open her last live performances she gave a few years ago.”

Here is the video of Kate Bush’s “Lily” – which wonderfully features Lily Cornford herself intoning the invocation, comforting and guiding Kate Bush with words, loving touch, and graceful gestures.
Finally, the last lines of Lily Cornford’s invocation “That we may know the truth, And do our whole duty, As we journey to thy sacred feet,” the singing and video of Kate Bush, and the inspiration of Giovanni’s spirit and friendship all coalesced into guiding a presentation I’d already planned with Katie Chase for her “Building Bridges” on-line program which is to be dedicated to Giovanni and his most beloved place in the body, the feet! Building Bridges with ZB: The Structure, Energy and Culture of the Foot with David Lauterstein on Sat, April 24, 2021
The foot is intricate, robust and often taken for granted, even abused. This call will dive into the structure(s) of the foot, including bones and muscles, with a special stop to consider the phalanges and adductor hallucis. We’ll also discuss the culture of the foot from perspectives such as undervalued, bound as a method of oppression, and the literal and figurative potential it holds in moving life forward.
David Lauterstein is a national figure in massage and bodywork and faculty with the Zero Balancing Health Association. Join us for what will no doubt be an informative and insightful discussion.
