IN MEMORIAM - BOB KING
Coming up on the birthday of my dear friend and teacher, Bob King.
Rest in peace, Bob. Today I happened to run across my eulogy from his funeral.
Eulogy for Bob King's memorial -
I got from Bob King, mostly, the gift of learning massage; but I got two actual gifts from him over the course of our friendship. One was a plaque that said “God is Love” and the other was a hairbrush.
I use them both, more often the hairbrush actually.
I know that the challenges of life test all of our faith.
And I know especially since Kathie King, Bob’s wife, passed away his faith was shaken.
Bob had an abiding faith in Kathie, in his friends, in his students, and in the profession of massage. He was a loyal friend with a warrior spirit - a barbarian and a seminarian.
Bob loved history and he loved sports. He always wanted the good guys to win and counted himself among those good guys and he was.
Life challenges our fondest hopes; sometimes it crushes them. We all have to fight to make our lives better and this world a better place. In honoring his memory, we honor all people who have struggled, succeeded, and struggled again in this miraculous and challenging world.
I believe it would be his wish that not lose our faith in whatever is most important to us and that we keep fighting for it.
As far as the hairbrush goes - Kathie’s hair was so distinctive that she put her profile on her original business card. Bob had wavy, rusty hair that reminded one of some of his dogs. So perhaps the hairbrush too is expression of an impossible dream….......that every day might be a good hair day!
Evidently, with these two gifts, Bob had concerns for my eternal soul, as well as the quality of my everyday life. My soul is in good order. I have however considerably less hair!
